Sensei Kim Moore Seido Men's Club Captain
Sensei Kim started Seido Karate as a teenager in 1983, and was the 3rd in his family to join Christchurch Shibu, with brothers Kent and Glen already training and going on to Sandan and Shodan black belts respectively in the years to come.
Learning to push both the fitness and pain barrier when starting a long association with press ups on his knuckles, Sensei Kim's first instructor Senpai Steve Prior left an indelible memory of his countless one-arm press ups and lent proof that with regular effort anything was possible.
Coming from a family of 4 boys, including his twin brother Senpai Kent, it comes as no surprise that Sensei Kim had a real interest in sparring and couldn't wait to gain his green belt and join the regular Saturday morning sparring class.
This was often tempered over the coming years with ‘butterflies' in the stomach when driving towards the Dojo to sparring knowing what “hard sparring” really meant and there were times that tested not only his skills but also his recovery rate to the knocks and bruises associated with the degree of intensity of the day.
Sensei Kim is married and has two wonderful daughters who are home schooled by wife Elizabeth, having moved out to Rangiora in 2007 and taking on a burgeoning new role in sales in the agriculture market as part of his plan to have more quality time with his family.
Over 20 years after attending his first Saturday morning sparring class, Sensei Kim is now the instructor and recognises how important his role is. It is his intention to deliver training to the students that he feels optimises the best of the various training methods he has been privy to by the highly skilled instructors before him.
Sensei Kim's goal with the class is to aid students to learn sparring in a safe environment while still being tested. Students need to know their safety is paramount and the sparring at a fair level for their age, size and skill however bumps and bruises are part of the experience.
Every week is different to keep the class motivated while under-pinned with a skills acquisition program that is cycled to match quarterly general gradings. Numerous guest instructors share their knowledge, and inter-club relationships have been fostered with other martial art styles where mutual respect can allow for integrated training from time to time.
To try and walk the tightrope of meeting so many levels of ability and physical expectation Sensei Kim's emphasis is on keeping the intensity high for all, however providing a graduation in contact level across the dojo floor so “full contact” students can work one end while “speed/agility” students work the other. Then students can also move around and test themselves in each area as they feel fit.
Sensei Kim is currently the Men's Club Captain for Christchurch Shibu.
