"Kung Fu movies did it for me"

I started karate in the beginning of 1973, not because of the movies ( well I did enjoy them); more importantly I needed to challenge myself with something hard.

I obtained 6th Kyu (White belt) on July 21st 1973, under the style of NZ Kyokushikai Karate Do.

Sensei Doug Holloway was the grading instructor.

My class instructor was Sensei James Bryce, an early black belt holder from our Dojo.

I gained my Shodan rank on the 3rd June 1978 under the style of Shushikai Karate Kan. I have also studied Shorinji Kempo and Aikido.

In the mid 1980's I created and introduced women's self defence courses which I taught as an evening classes at several Christchurch High schools.

My return to active karate in 1998 started at our dojo when my three children began training.

I re-graded to Shodan in Dec 1999, to Nidan in Sept 2004 and Sandan in June 2009

I instruct on a Friday morning at 6.15am start time.

I have been asked over the time, “What do I teach?”

Here are quotes from some of my regular students explaining why they come:

Come along and you can find out too!

Karate has been a family thing for me - I have three children who are now all black belt holders in our Dojo. They all started between 7 and 13 years of age.

During their journey it has been wonderful as a parent to see them grow up with the skill and confidence karate has given them.

That skill and confidence Seido gives, is something special, and I have seen this in all of the students who have passed through our Dojo.

I have been a professional photographer for 20 years, and an engineer / builder for the times when I have not been a photographer. And when I am not working on the house or doing photography or karate, I like to go tramping.

Senpai Barry can be found teaching his regular class on friday mornings at 6.15am.
